The Quiet One is a groundbreaking documentary film that follows the rehabilitation of an emotionally disturbed African-American boy named Robert at the Wiltwyck School for Boys in New York. The film was made in 1948, and it was one of the first documentaries to focus on the experiences of African-American children.The film begins with Robert arriving at Wiltwyck. He is withdrawn and hostile, and he has a difficult time interacting with other people. However, the staff at Wiltwyck are determined to help him. They use a variety of methods, including therapy, education, and recreation, to help Robert overcome his emotional problems. Over time, Robert begins to make progress. He opens up to the staff and other students, and he starts to participate in activities. He also begins to make friends.
The film was awarded by the National Board of Review as a top 10 film in 1949 as well as it was with the International Award at the Venice Film Festival in 1949 where it was a nominee for the Golden Lion. The piece was nominated twice at the Academy Awards for Best Writing and Story and for Best Documentary in 1950 and 1949.
