Specializing in protecting the unprotectable, the female head of a private detective agency must assist a client caught deep in a murderous gamble.

Somebody’s running a takeover on crime lord King Lathrop’s operation using masked men in Hannibal Lecter lookalike masks. Clueless, King Lathrop calls private detective Velvet Smooth for help. With the help of her friends Ria, a lawyer, and Frankie, she infiltrates the criminal underworld to investigate. Velvet finds this may be an inside job led by King Lathrop’s man Calvin. When Velvet reports this to Lathrop, he denies it at first but the problems come closer to Calvin. Hurt by it all, Lathrop fires Calvin. Although Lathrop thinks Calvin masterminded the take-over on his own, Velvet remains unconvinced and seeks further to find out who was the man behind the man.
Velvet Smooth is a low-budget independent film that was part of the blaxploitation genre that emerged in the 1970s. Blaxploitation films were made by and for African-American audiences and featured black protagonists in urban settings, often dealing with crime, violence, and social issues. Velvet Smooth is also one of the few blaxploitation films that features a female lead who uses martial arts skills to fight her enemies. The film was shot on location in New York City and used mostly unknown actors, except for Emerson Boozer, who was a former football player for the New York Jets. The film was distributed by Howard Mahler Films and had a limited theatrical release. It has become a cult film among fans of blaxploitation and martial arts cinema.
