Italian police on Monday (January 16) released footage of the immediate aftermath of the arrest of Matteo Messina Denaro, the country's most wanted mafia boss who had been on the run since 1993.

Police could be seen walking Denaro out of Palermo's "La Maddalena" hospital on Monday morning, in the city's northern suburbs, leading him into a minivan that drove away.

Denaro was said to be undergoing treatment at the private hospital in the Sicilian capital.

Prosecutors say Messina Denaro, 60, is a boss of Sicily's Cosa Nostra mafia.

He had been sentenced in absentia to a life term for his role in the 1992 murders of anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.
