What causes team members to be happy or unhappy at work?

Herzberg's Motivation-Hygiene Theory  (also known as the Two-Factor Theory and the Dual-Factor Theory) states that there are certain factors in the workplace that cause job satisfaction, while a separate set of factors cause dissatisfaction.

"Motivators" are things such as  challenging work, recognition for one's achievement, responsibility, opportunity to do something meaningful, involvement in decision making and a sense of importance to an organization that give a person a sense of positive satisfaction, arising from the intrinsic conditions of the job itself. This includes recognition, achievement and personal growth.

"Hygiene Factors" are  things such as status, job security, salary, benefits, and work conditions that don't give satisfaction or create increased motivation, although dissatisfaction can result from not having them.  These are separate from the work itself and also include things such as company policies and salary.
