Apolipoproteins combine with lipids (oil-soluble substances like fat and cholesterol) to form lipoproteins. They are important for transporting lipids through the lymphatic and circulatory systems. There are a number of different lipoproteins, such as Apo A-1, Apo B-48, Apo B-100,  Apo E, and Apo C-2. Respectively, they are responsible for the activation of LCAT, secretion of chylomicrons into the blood, binding of LDL and VLDL, emptying of chylomicrons into the liver, and the release of free fatty acids from lipids.
