STORYLINE:

Iraqi Kurds celebrated in front of the Headquarters of Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) after their leader Jalal Talabani was elected as new interim Iraqi President on Wednesday.

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan is one of two key Kurdish parties in Iraq.

Talabani's election was seen by some as reaching out to the nation's long-repressed Kurdish minority and taking one of the final steps toward forming Iraq's first democratically elected government in 50 years.

In a largely symbolic, secret election, lawmakers also elected Shiite Adel Abdul-Mahdi and interim Iraqi President Ghazi al-Yawer, a Sunni Arab, as Talabani's vice presidents.

Wednesday's election was largely a formality.

Lawmakers had already agreed on Talabani and the two vice presidential candidates during weeks of sometimes tense negotiations held after the country's historic, January 30 elections.

The three were the only candidates and received a total of 227 votes.

30 ballots were left blank.

The announcement of the new lawmakers drew applause in the National Assembly, and many in parliament crowded around Talabani to congratulate him.

Born in 1933, Talabani joined the Kurdistan Democratic Party as a teenager and then founded the PUK in 1975.

He helped lead the Kurdish fight in Iraq's north against toppled leader Saddam Hussein.
