More than 320,000 human cases of food-borne zoonotic diseases are confirmed in the European Union each year. Food-borne zoonotic diseases, such as campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis and E. coli, are caused by consuming food or drinking water contaminated by bacteria and their toxins, viruses and parasites.
