What Breed of Goat Is The Best?

I have often been asked what breed of goat should I look for. I started out with nanny's I bought from the sale barn as that was all that was available to me almost 20 yrs ago. Most were Boer type. That combination was a terrible way to start for a beginner who wanted to raise them like cattle. My Boers were terrible mothers in pasture situations and were very parasite prone. Many died and I learned from that mistake. I use Spanish bucks, Kiko bucks, Myotonic bucks, and Tex Master style (Myotonic x Boer) bucks, but my favorite breed of Nanny's and Bucks are ones I raise myself. They have survived my mismanagement style and done better than their contemporaries. The ones you raise yourself will probably be your best ones also. They know your place, your forage, and are survivors. You should value them highly because you can't go out and buy more of them. They are only raised once a year by you. If you do need to buy more breeding stock try to find someone who raises them in the same style you do or plan to. If they will sell them, they will be very valuable to your success in the goat business. When you begin getting doelings you raised into your breeding herd you will see a remarkable difference in your success rate.
