I was listening this morning to a lesson I had given recently to my pupil Shayaan Ahmed Saqib, a fine sarod player in his own right, in the raga Gaud Sarang. By all metrics available to me, it turned out to be a good representation of the raga, with insights that will benefit all instrumentalists who are trying to learn this raga.

The teaching of stylized phraseology based on listening, imitation, instant feedback, and then repetition of the correct timings, is a key feature of the traditional method of teaching Hindustani music. However, to get to this stage, the student must be quite competent on their instrument, which Shayaan, fortunately, is. He has been studying with me for 12 years, and is quick on the uptake and a pleasure to teach.
