This 1950 black and white film is one of a series of traffic safety films. It was produced for Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company by Traffic Safety Films Inc, in conjunction with the Los Angeles Police Department. The focus of this public safety video is to encourage drivers to control their speed while driving on the then-rarely-used ‘rural’ highways of Los Angeles. The film begins with an Education Unit police officer opening a binder titled “Highway Driving” (0:07-0:29). The camera pans past a street in Los Angeles busy with 1940s cars, panel trucks, buses, and pedestrians (0:30-0:53). In contrast, a rural highway area is shown with a single 1940s Chevy driving down the road (0:54-1:22). The Sergeant, wearing a 1940s Los Angeles Police uniform, walks around his office, past a wall chart showcasing accident fatalities (1:23-1:59). To make his points, he uses a miniature model of a four-lane road. He pushes a car to simulate conditions where an accident might occur due to all four cars converged to the same area (2:00-2:22). He gives another demonstration on a vintage miniature three-lane open highway, where traffic can flow in either direction in the center lane (2:23-3:04). 1940s cars are shown and nearly avoid an accident while passing (3:12-3:24). Another driver uses a hand signal and passes safely (3:25-3:43). A 1940s LaSalle Convertible drives waits for visual clearance to pass, also using a hand signal (3:44-4:04). Two cars pass on a hill, and a third car crosses an intersection (4:05-4:15). The sergeant gives another demonstration with miniatures to leave space when the car in front pulls out to pass (4:29-4:51). A man is shown dozing off while driving, and he pulls over to a vintage café for coffee or a nap (4:52-5:16). The video ends with the police sergeant talking to the camera, and he closes the instructional binder (5:17-5:49).
