Another dramatic Welsh medieval castle,
Another dramatic Welsh medieval castle, this time we’re at Pembroke Castle in Pembrokeshire, West Wales. The first castle was built on the site back in 1093 during the Norman invasion of Wales. Although the site itself has been used since Roman times.
In the inner ward of the castle, you’ll find one of the most striking of the castle’s structures, the round Great Keep. It is over 80 feet tall and has a domed roof which could be adapted to hold a wooden fighting platform which overlooked attackers.
Beneath the castle is Wogan cavern which has been used for the past 12,000 years from the early cave dwellers right up to the English Civil War.
Henry VII, the first Tudor monarch was born in Pembroke Castle on 28th January 1457, in the tower overlooking the Westgate.
During the English Civil War in 1648, Oliver Cromwell came to Pembroke and took the castle after a seven-week long siege.
After the English Civil War, the castle was then abandoned and allowed to decay until 1928 when Sir Ivor Philipps acquired the castle and began an extensive restoration project.

The castle is usually open all year except Christmas and New Year’s Day but it’s always worth checking before you visit.
