In this video Mr. Swarthout shows you the relationship between work, potential energy and kinetic energy.  Mr. Swarthout will show you how the work done by an external force equals the change in potential energy, how potential energy is converted to kinetic energy and how to determine the final velocity of an object.

For the example shown in this video, work is done on the object to raise the object to a specific height. At its greatest height, before it is released, it is at rest and has no kinetic energy but has its greatest amount of potential energy. When it is allowed to fall back down the objects potential energy is converted to kinetic energy. Just before it reaches the bottom the object will have reached its greatest velocity. All of its potential energy has been converted to kinetic energy. Therefore, it will have no potential energy but it will have its greatest kinetic energy.
