Explanation of how work is done in physics.  Included are two examples and a description of situations where you may think you are working but actually are not.

Work is the product of force applied and the distance through which the force is applied. In physics, a force is said to do work if, when it is applied, there is movement of the object in the direction of the applied force. Work in this sense is the transfer of energy from one object to another. The work-energy principle states that an increase in the kinetic energy of an object is equal amount of positive work done on the object by a force acting on the object. A decrease in kinetic energy of an object is equal amount of negative work done by the force acting on the object. The SI unit for kinetic energy is the joule.

Power is the rate a which work is done. Also stated as how fast work is done. Power is calculated as the amount of work done divided by the time it takes to do the specified amount of work. Power is directly proportional to the amount of work done and inversely proportional to the time it takes to do the work. Therefore, if the same amount of work is done over a shorter period of time then a greater amount of power is exerted. The SI unit for power is the watt.
