Today (May 1) in the year 1960, two separate states named Maharashtra and Gujarat came into existence. The basis of this division was language.
The State Reorganization Commission did not pay heed to the demand of various lobbies who wanted a separate Maharashtra.
The Samyukta Maharashtra Movement which had been existent since 1940 became more aggressive with time. Its Gujarati counterpart was the Mahagujarat Movement gained pace, especially, after 1956.
