Today I wanted to share the method I’ve been using to plant trees here at Goldifarms, which is on the Central Coast of California, in zone 9.

To celebrate the solstice I planted this Shoestring Acacia, (Acacia stenophylla) which is a nitrogen-fixing, evergreen tree.

My planting method includes creating my own gopher baskets, which I will share in another video, and planting on a berm next to my water battery. Later I’ll be planting a permaculture guild around the tree, but for now I want to focus on helpful methods for giving this tree the best chance of survival.

A few things I cover include observation of the site, the size of the hole, preparing the root ball by loosening the roots, amending the soil with compost, and creating a berm and swale around the tree to direct the flow of water.

These are just a few of my tips, but I’m really excited to hear what tips and things you’ve come across that might be helpful.
