The V set is the oldest type train currently in operation in New South Wales. They were built by Commonwealth Engineering and the first entered service on 22 June 1970 as set F111. For comparison, the first XPT (built by Comeng and ABB) entered service in 1981, the first Tangara (built by Goninan at Broadmedow) entered service in 1988, the first Millennium (built by Downer at Cardiff) entered service 2002 and the first Waratah (also built by Downer at Cardiff) entered service in 2011.
