In this video I guide you through the The Self-Compassion Break which was developed by Kristen Nefff. Kristen Neff is credited with conducting the first academic studies into self-compassion.

This informal Mindful Self-Compassion exercise can be used any time of day or night. It will help you remember to evoke the three aspects of self-compassion in the moment you need it most.

The three components of self compassion:

1) Mindfulness
In order to practice compassion we first must be aware of the fact that there is suffering. By being mindful of the painful emotion that we’re feeling in that specific moment, rather than pushing it away, or over-identifying with it, we are turning towards ourselves and also, creating space between ourselves and this pain.

2) Common humanity
A sense of interconnectedness is central to self-compassion. It’s recognising that all humans experiences hardship, stress and suffering. It’s an important reminder that we are not alone.

3) Self-Kindness
Self-kindness means to understand and comfort yourself, like you would a good friend.
In this part of the exercise we work to comfort and reassure ourselves using kind language.
