Breathing is something we do all of the time but are are often not aware of it. By focussing on the breath we ground ourselves in the body and the present moment. Remember that we are not trying to change or manipulate the breath - this exercise is simply about noting what is already here.

When doing this exercise you may notice how different emotional states have different breathing patterns.  When we are relaxed our breathing deepens and is often lower in the body (the abdomen) and when we are anxious or upset our breathing increases and is often higher in the body (the chest).  

If your mind wanders just bring it back to the breath, if you mind wanders repeatedly that okay too - just keep bringing the mind back to the breath.
