More than three million patients
More than three million patients are treated for serious psychiatric disorders. Some of them are interned in UMDs, units for difficult patients, closed centers that resemble prisons, surrounded by perimeter walls topped with barbed wire. The patients stay there for several months. Medical teams are often at a loss when faced with these difficult cases. Some patients, with mild or more severe disorders, are also seen in psychiatric emergencies in hospitals. How can these patients be treated and reintegrated into society?
