The joint Amtrak-Caltrans "Capitols" train between San Jose an Sacramento, California, began running Dec. 12, 1991. A day before that, an inaugural run was made from Oakland to Sacramento for dignitaries and members of the press. Amtrak's only open-platform business car, the "Beech Grove," was on the tail end.

Brand new GE P32-BWH locomotive Amtrak 501 (now Caltrans CDTX 2051) and its train of Horizon Fleet cars is shown here on the big curve between the coachyard and the Amtrak (former Southern Pacific) 16th St station.

The train was later renamed "Capitol Corridor" to avoid confusion with Amtrak's "Capitol Limited" train and is the fourth busiest corridor in Amtrak's system.

This video replaces a 2013 edit. I used Topaz AI software to improve the original 8mm video footage.
