An early 1988 visit to Oakland, California's 16th St Station (built by Southern Pacific in 1912) brought a surprise: a SD40T-2 "Tunnel Motor" on the point of the California Zephyr, Train 6, as it arrived from the coachyard. One of the F40PH locos had its turbocharger fail before the start of the eastward trip to Chicago, and SP came to the rescue.

In addition to the unexpected locomotive, this train seems peculiar in that there's only one sleeping car. (There are coaches where sleeping cars would be in current practice.) There are two baggage cars: one a former "ambulance car" (US military) and the other from the Northern Pacific.

Enjoy the sounds of the 16-cylinder EMD 645 engine and turbocharger, as well as all the creaks, squeaks, and rumbling.

Also seen is a northbound San Joaquin arriving in Oakland, pulled by a Phase III F40PH and a mix of Phase II and Phase III hi-level cars and Superliners.

Original 8mm video footage enhanced using Topaz Artificial Intelligence software and edited in 4K.
