Welcome back to the channel, music enthusiasts! Today, we're diving into the long-awaited release of Kill Devil Hill's latest album, "Seas of Oblivion," which officially dropped on September 20, 2023. If you're like me and sometimes struggle to keep up with new releases over the weekend, you're in luck because this mid-week release gives us something to look forward to!

Kill Devil Hill, for those who may not be familiar, is a band with an impressive pedigree. It's something of a supergroup, and it's evolved over the years with different members. Initially founded by Rex Brown of Pantera fame and Vinny Appice from Black Sabbath, the band has seen some lineup changes. Mark Zavon and Dewey Bragg have also made significant contributions to the group's sound.

But here's an interesting tidbit: the band's name, Kill Devil Hill, pays homage to the town of Kill Devil Hills in North Carolina, where the Wright brothers had their first attempt at powered flight. If you're a history buff, you'll know that their inaugural flight didn't exactly go as planned, resulting in a rather spectacular crash.

Now, let's talk about their sound. Kill Devil Hill has managed to stay heavy and modern without falling into the clichés of contemporary hardcore, like indecipherable vocals or overused blast beats. It's a refreshing approach that sets them apart.

A little history lesson for you: In May 2012, they hit the road with rock band Adrenaline Mob, and a year later, they released "Revolution Rise," their second studio album and their final collaboration with Vinny Appice and Rex Brown. Appice's departure in 2014 was attributed to his bandmates' chronic tardiness – yes, "unpunctual" is indeed a real word, despite how unusual it may sound.

Johnny Kelly, formerly of Type O Negative, stepped in as Appice's replacement. The band continued to make waves, even performing on Motörhead's Boat Cruise in September 2014. Following their tours, they started crafting another album with their new drummer, Johnny Kelly, whom I just mentioned.

Fast forward to early 2023, and the band revealed they had signed with Legend Recordings and had a new album in the works for the same year. They teased fans with a single, "Blood in the Water," from their upcoming third album. And here we are today, talking about "Seas of Oblivion."

This album boasts a solid 15 tracks, clocking in at about an hour in length, with a bonus Black Sabbath cover thrown in for good measure. The band's sound is unmistakably heavy and grungy, with a noticeable influence from Alice in Chains. While they pay homage to their influences, Kill Devil Hill still manages to maintain their own distinct identity. You might catch a few nods to Alice in Chains in some songs, whether intentional or not.

So, if you're a fan of heavy, grungy rock with a touch of nostalgia and a modern twist, "Seas of Oblivion" is definitely worth a listen. Kill Devil Hill's return after a decade is a musical journey you won't want to miss.
