The crux of GRE exam is practice, diligence and of course memory. Believe me the memory of yours will come handy as it has never had. You can opt for any two options in GRE. It can be general GRE where you will be sitting for two papers, Quantitative and Verbal Ability. The other is you can take subject GRE, where you can sit for an additional paper as well. GRE will help you get into the top 10 colleges (Stanford, Gatech, UMich, UIUC., etc.). Keeping a backup career option is important. Give your best to go to the U.S.A.
Now coming to preparation, how long will it take? It really depends on your potential. 6 months is a decent time for preparation. Since GRE is round the year exam, you can take it anytime you feel like. There is a considerable amount that you have to pay to book your exam slot for GRE. Remember that you can postpone your date (incase you feel you are not prepared), in that case again you will have to rebook with the same amount. So please book your slot, only when you are confident of cracking it.
Quantitative Ability: Do not aim at anything lesser than 800 in Quant. It is because, Quant is the section where you can max your score. Aim at 800 and get it. Believe me the Quant section is easier than anything else. Do barron tactics for 3 or 4 days. Do not prepare all day for Quant. The 30 minutes you prepare, concentrate well. That is enough.
After doing barron tactics, solve bigbook - one section every day (it takes 30 minutes). Then correct it. Analyse your performance after some time. You have to do "some" Quant daily for about two months. Do the tests in a specified time of the day daily. Analyze it in a specified time of day. That is the kind of groove you need to get yourself into. In the meantime, document your results daily. You may take a two- or three-day break from Quant (merely reviewing the formulas briefly), and then repeat the exact same bigbook tests in the same order. This time see if you can solve a section in 2/3rds of the time allotted, i.e., in a maximum of 20 minutes. Solve more sections each day than before. Compare the new results with previous results you recorded. Are you making the same mistakes again, or new ones? Even on questions where you did not commit mistakes both times, see if you can find a faster, shorter way of solving the problems. If you repeat your mistakes, it means that you need to work on that type questions more. Learn new tactics for those. See what is the best tactic for a problem. Work systematically. This way, within 80 or 90 days.
Now, go to the real tests. Take Kaplan CD, see what tactics he suggests, see if there is anything you did not know. Likewise do Princeton. And don't spend too much time on these. So spend more time on verbal. That does not mean "stop Quant". Review briefly every day.
Verbal Ability
Verbal ability is the most important section of the test and deserves considerable preparation. To put it in a single word, you should try and be the word "discipline" itself.
Begin with "Norman Lewis". Develop a love for words. Enjoy words. Only then you can be successful with Verbal. Learn words to learn them understand them, then use them. Not for marks. If you begin to develop a love for words, it will ultimately fetch you not only marks, and also a sense of well being, of having been enriched and improved.
So, begin with norman lewis. Do 1 section(or 2 at the most) everyday(It will take you 10 to 15 minutes per section). Do the tests given in it seriously. NOT frivolously. Meanwhile, begin to work with Barron. It is strictly not advisable to cramm 100’s odd unconnected words everyday. . It won't help. You will remember nothing. Look at its meaning as it is given in the dictionary Allot a definite time of the day each day. Learn not more than 30 words everyday.
AWA
The last section is an essay writing portion which comes with a difficult topic. So be young and original. Ask help from your teachers incase you are taking GRE classes elsewhere.  Ultimately, I feel that as Indians we have got good command over English so we will be able to crack the same.
After the exam GRE gives you a chance to apply for three universities free of cost. So please go through the best (for you) colleges and apply after the exam.
As you apply to the colleges, along with your score, the universities see another thing, i.e the SOP (subject of purpose). A clearly thought out SOP, a well written (or typed) application stating why you need to be admitted by the school, great references and punctual submission of documents and follow up should ultimately fulfil your goal.
