The ragi malt porridge smells almost as wonderful as the scent of a baby. The creamy porridge when eaten warm is so comforting and is one of the earliest known weaning foods for babies, in India.

A tablespoon or two is all that’s required to make a simple breakfast porridge for an older infant or toddler. The porridge is so comforting that it is also known to satiate the hunger pangs of the sleep deprived mother (of a young baby)

It can be sweetened with a date or raisin puree or a bit of organic jaggery. A pinch of cardamom or cinnamon can be added to enhance the flavour and nutrition. It can be paired with soft fruits like stewed apples or ripe bananas.

The trick to making a silky soft porridge without lumps is to stir it vigorously right in the beginning so that the powder mixes well with the water. As it cooks it takes on a satiny texture which gives a very good mouth feel.

When introducing infants to weaning foods, a lot of importance must be given to texture. If it is grainy or coarse, most often the baby’s reflex would be to push it out making mealtimes stressful for both parent and child.

Ragi or nachni is an ancient Indian grain which aids growth and development by boosting the metabolism and strengthening the skeletal system.
