A introduction to an often overlooked skill in treading water and feeling comfortable in deep water: how to get started with learning to use your hands for sculling (lift) and controlling your body position.

The key skill is to learn the skill of using your hands to create water pressure, keep that pressure constant and then maintain consistent form. Otherwise, you sink!

Secondly, most beginners make the mistake of trying to tread water with hands and legs. This is so confusing and tiring.

Third, practice in shallow water so you can experiment without fear of messing up or drowning! Keep at the basics until you can take your feet off the ground (face in the water) for 10 seconds or so without feeling like you're working too hard.

It's literally all in the wrist (and hand).

And, remember that Buoyancy Awareness is the foundation for treading water in this way.

If you learn this well, you'll never need to use your legs to stay "afloat" ever again - although it is a useful skill to learn, as well.
