STORYLINE:

U-N Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Representative for Afghanistan, Lakhdar Brahimi, met on Wednesday with the former Afghan King Zaher Shah in his residence, 10 miles north of Rome.

After private talks lasting around an hour the United Nations representative said he was very honoured and satisfied with the meeting, but that it was too early to discuss the details of a post Taliban broad-based Afghan government.

He added that Afghanistan was a divided, fractured society that was involved in a war on two fronts.

He said more details regarding the make up of a post-Taliban coalition would be revealed after a Security Council meeting next week.
