Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture (西双版纳傣族自治州)
Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture (西双版纳傣族自治州) is located in the extreme south of Yunnan Province, China, bordering Myanmar and Laos. Its capital is Jinghong (景洪市), the largest city in the region, situated along the Mekong River, known locally as the Lancang River. This area is renowned for its unique ethnic diversity, particularly the Dai people, and its distinct culture, architecture, and language, which bear similarities to those of the Shan, Dai, and Tai peoples, including the Thai and Lao.
The name "Xishuangbanna" is derived from the Tai Lü language, meaning "twelve thousand rice paddies," reflecting the area's traditional division into twelve districts. Historically, before 1886, it was known as Chiang Hung, a Tai Lue Kingdom, and has seen influence and control from various regional powers, including China, Lanna (Thailand), and Burma, over the centuries.
Xishuangbanna's history is marked by its strategic location and cultural richness. Following the Mongol conquest in 1296, it was governed by native Tusi governors under the Ming and Qing dynasties. The area experienced significant changes during the 20th century, including the establishment of the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Region in 1953 by the People's Republic of China, which aimed to end the native-chieftain system and promote equality and development among its diverse ethnic groups.
The region is characterized by its humid subtropical climate, which supports a rich biodiversity, including the last few Asian elephants in China. However, the expansion of natural rubber plantations poses a threat to its ecological diversity. Xishuangbanna is also a cultural and tourist destination, known for its rainforests, rare plants, wildlife, and ethnic festivals, such as the Water-Splashing Festival of the Dai New Year.
Administratively, Xishuangbanna oversees one county-level city and two counties, with a total population of over 1.1 million people as of the 2010 census. The demographic composition includes a significant number of Dai people, alongside Han Chinese and various other ethnic minorities, reflecting the region's ethnic diversity and cultural richness.
