Why do we need openings in beams
Why core cutting is a structural issue
What is a sleeve
How do you plan a sleeve.
These are some of the points discussed in this video.
Generally, it is not ideal to have services run through the beams. However, it is a challenge to avoid it as the builders will want it due to the building height reason.
Same way, core cuts are not allowed as it will create structural issues. So, the solution is to have planned openings in beams which are called sleeves.
We need to attend to the sleeve design. Firstly, choose Tension zones for sleeves. Don’t provide sleeves in compression zones. Provide it in Tension zones.
The reinforcement will be taking tension and hence it is okay. However, large openings need special attention.
