We all know that cantilever slabs and beams are undesirable. It is not great to have cantilevers. 3 main reasons to avoid cantilevers are listed below.

1) Cantilever do not provide alternate structural load paths and hence is susceptible to disproportionate collapse
2) Cantilevers reduces the seismic resistance of the building.
3) Cantilevers often needs more member sizes i.e., depth and hence is not economic and is not aesthetic.

However, small cantilevers can be incorporated in a scheme if carefully designed and attended.
There has been situations when an already built cantilevers are deficient in steel or depth and then the cantilever developing excessive deflections and even developing cracks.

When such situations are encountered, engineers and often clients and architects, decide to prop the cantilever or provide support at one end.
The video describes, why such alterations or additional support is not desirable always. It may be ok and helpful in many cases but then there can be situations when the solution can create another criticality. The change in structural behavior of the structural member should be appreciated while deciding the solution.
