Military leaders from the West African group of states, known as ECOWAS, are meeting in Ghana to discuss a possible military intervention in Niger's coup.

Officials at the meeting restated the regional group's readiness to take action, to restore Niger's deposed president. They expressed frustration with the junta for refusing to hold talks. Though a standby military force has been activated, ECOWAS members say they would prefer a diplomatic solution. Niger's neighbours have already applied economic sanctions, which are beginning to bite.
