A fossil of the ‘biggest bug that ever lived’ has been discovered in northern England.

The fossil belongs to a creature named Arthropleura, which was about 22 inches wide and 8.6 feet long when it was alive. Its weight was believed to be up to 110 pounds, which makes it the largest known invertebrate in history. ‘It was a complete fluke of a discovery,’ said Neil Davies, a lecturer at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Earth Science. It was a former student of Davies’ who first spotted the fossil.

Arthropleura lived on the Earth an estimated 45 million years ago. This is only the third Arthropleura fossil that scientists have ever discovered, and the other two are much smaller than this one.
‘This is definitely the biggest bug that ever lived,’ Davies said, via CNN.

The fossil will be displayed at the UK’s Sedgwick Museum in 2022.
