In 1838, the Cherokee Indians
In 1838, the Cherokee Indians were forced to give up their remaining lands in the east, migrating to what is now Oklahoma. Over 4 thousand died on the journey known as the Trail of Tears, but some Cherokee remained behind, hiding in the mountains of Appalachia. They survived as a people and are now taking steps to make sure their language survives as well.
