While the Iguazu Falls leaves one in awe, the harness of its extraordinary power at the Itaipu Hydroelectric Dam is just as inspiring.

The Itaipu Dam is on the Paraná River located on the border between Brazil and Paraguay. It is the third largest hydroelectric dam in the world, and holds the 45th largest reservoir in the world.

In 1994, the American Society of Civil Engineers elected the Itaipu Dam as one of the seven modern Wonders of the World.

Completed in 1984, it is a undertaking run jointly by Brazil and Paraguay at the border. The project ranges from Foz do Iguaçu, in Brazil, and Ciudad del Este in Paraguay.

To visit the dam from Foz do Iguaçu, take a public bus (several buses go there) to the visitor center (https://www.turismoitaipu.com.br/).

The “Panoramic Tour” is the traditional tour of the plant. The tour begins with a movie about the history of the dam; Then a narrated bus ride takes you to the factory, stopping at two observation platforms. The bus passes through different vantage points of the dam and the Itaipu Lake.

The guide on the bus explains how the dam works and how it was constructed, in both English and Portuguese.
