Tiger Quoll Calling Sound

The tiger quoll, also referred to as the spotted-tail quoll, spotted quoll, spotted-tail dasyure, native cat, or tiger cat, is an Australian carnivorous marsupial belonging to the quoll genus Dasyurus. It is recognized as Dasyurus maculatus and is the second-largest surviving carnivorous marsupial globally, following the Tasmanian devil. Male and female tiger quolls weigh approximately 3.5 and 1.8 kg (7.7 and 4.0 lb), respectively.

There are two acknowledged subspecies of the tiger quoll. The first one, known as the nominate subspecies, inhabits the wet forests of southeastern Australia and Tasmania. The second subspecies, D. m. gracilis, is endangered and can be found in a small region of northern Queensland.

The tiger quoll's natural habitat is in eastern Australia, specifically in areas where annual rainfall exceeds 600 mm. In the past, they were distributed across southeastern Queensland, eastern New South Wales, Victoria, southeastern South Australia, and Tasmania. However, the arrival of European settlers has had a significant negative impact on the quoll's population and their distribution has become fragmented. Today, tiger quolls are rare in southeastern Queensland and are primarily found in national parks. In Victoria, their population has declined by nearly 50%. Although the decline was not as severe in New South Wales, they are still considered rare in that region. In South Australia, the quoll was never abundant.

In Tasmania, the tiger quoll primarily inhabits the northern and western areas where rainfall is seasonal. While they were once native to Flinders and King Islands, they have been extirpated from these regions since the 20th century and are no longer present on Tasmanian offshore islands.
