Easy to Make Gelatin Bubbles for Cake Decorating

Gelatin bubbles look really cool, luckily they're fairly easy to make! They do take a good bit of time to prepare, but they will last for years if you store them properly.

I prefer to work with small batches of gelatin at a time (1 packet with 2 tablespoons of cold water). This gives me more options for different colors. However, you might find it easier to coat the balloons if you have a larger amount of gelatin in your bowl.

Before dipping the balloons, you need to cover them with a very thin layer of shortening. If it is too thick, the gelatin will just roll right off. If it's too thin, the balloon won't release easily from the bubble.

After 3 coats of gelatin, the bubbles need a full 24 hours to dry. They will sound like hard plastic or glass when you tap them. If they still sound and feel like rubber, they need more time.
