History of Japan 2: Ancient Times (Part 1) - Asuka Period

EPISODE 68 of BUT THAT IS ANOTHER HISTORY (web documentary series)

The Asuka period of Japan was born when immigrants from the mainland (China and Korea) introduced Buddhism and Confucianism among the Japanese upper class, including the imperial court. It was the Emperor Bidatsu who surrounded himself with a pro-Buddhist clan, the Soga clan, while the Mononobe and the Nakatomi were more pro-Shintoist.

The Soga reached great power, especially with Prince Shotoku Taishi, who developed many palaces and temples and also the first constitution of Japan. However, the rope power ended with the Isshi Incident of 645, where the Nakatomi eliminated them from the place.

It is here, with the Emperor Kotoku, that an era of reforms known as the Taika era begins, based on systems of Chinese laws known as ritshuryo. The Asuka period ended when the Empress Genmei changed the capital from Asuka to Nara, known as Heijo-kyo, in 710 AD.
