How to walk through the centre of Prague to avoid the crowds of tourists? The best way is to take advantage of the little-known passages and alleys that not only take you where you need to go, but also amaze you with their charm, historical stories and legends.

In this episode of the Live Prague series, we'll introduce you to just such alleys, of which there are many in the Old Town.

How do you get from Charles Bridge, the Mecca for all tourists in Prague, to Republic Square without having to wade through the crowds and still enjoy the beauty of the historic centre? From the bridge, walk through the Kepler Passage, which will lead you to Anenské Square. From there, walk past the monastery to Zlatá Street. Did you know that the secret passages hiding the Templar treasure are supposed to lead under the former St. Anne's Church?

From Zlatá Street, walk to Husova Street, which will transport you back in time several centuries. Turn into Jalovcova Street and continue to Jilská Street. There are several passages worth exploring. We chose to go through the Iron Door House via the Iron Gate Hotel reception - but don't worry, the passage is open to everyone, not just guests.

In Michalská Street, you can continue through the passage past the former St. Michael's Church to the passage of the U Závoje house, which has a beautiful story attached to it (you'll learn it in the video). Then just walk down Havelská Street to a small street with an interesting name - Kamzíková (chamois street). How did this name come to Prague, where you won't find any chamois far and wide? We will tell you that too.

Slip past Café Kamzík through Hrzánská arcade to Celetná. Don't worry, you won't stay with tourists for long, you will pass through the Manhart Palace passage to Štupartská. As you pass the Church of St. James the Greater, be sure to go inside and notice the blackened hand on the chain. From the church, you can walk down Jakubská Street to the Anchor and you are there.

What do you think of our shortcut? Do you have a favourite one in the centre of Prague? Share it with others in the comments!

By the way, thanks to the tucked away alleys and passageways, you'll avoid not only the crowds but also the tacky "decor" in the form of tourist shops. How is it possible that they are still defacing the historic centre? We looked at this in a previous episode: Nevkus v centru Prahy: Proč nikdo neo...
