About this viola masterclass:

0:00 Intro and playing part from Javier Martin De La Torre
4:00 Advice part from Kim Kashkashian

Javier Martín de la Torre starts playing the first movement of Bartok viola concerto and Professor Kim Kashkashian suggests to work theme by theme. Therefore, they start with the first interval of the soloist's part, a sixth that is a "first step" and, as such, requires an intentionality as if it was a walking step, helped by the body movement. Later, Professor Kashkashian also warns the student of the parts where it is necessary to go strictly in tempo because, playing with an orchestra, the orchestra will not be able to accommodate everything. She also gives some tips on how to play a passage more in tune and says that practicing intonation can be enjoyable because looking for resonance and finding it can be very satisfying. Finally, Professor Kashkashian emphasizes the importance of contrast, knowing when there is tension and when to release, when a part is active or passive within the whole sounding result.

What we learn:
- Intervals are like walking steps.
- Being aware of the orchestra part when playing a concerto.
- Tips to improve the intonation of a passage.
- Contrast, deciding where to go for tension or release.
