Nestled in the Democratic Republic of Congo is Kahuzi-Biega National Park, home to the eastern lowland gorilla or Grauer's gorilla.

During our time there, we were able to do 6 treks with these magnificent creatures. The Grauer's gorilla is considered endangered, with a decreasing populations as a result of a host of human activities - from the bushmeat trade to the effect that deforestation is having on their habitat.

While humans are undoubtedly the cause of the problem, we are also the only hope these sentient hominids have of survival into the future. Tourism has served to effectively protect gorillas in other parts of Africa and can generate revenue and communal goodwill for their conservation.

The only solution is to empower and incentivise communities to protect their wildlife. However, in the words of John Kahekwa, "hungry stomachs have no ears". Impoverished communities need to benefit from the protection of wildlife in order for them to be a voice for wildlife and not another drain on diminishing natural resources.
