USE OF THE PRESENT INDICATIVE IN ITALIAN
To express actions that take place in the present, when we speak (with expressions like "oggi, in questo momento, in questo periodo...").
For example:
Luca ha caldo! Puoi accendere il ventilatore? In questo momento sono le 5 di pomeriggio in Italia. Oggi cucino pasta alla carbonara. Paolo non sta bene: ha la febbre.
To indicate habits (with expressions like "ogni…, tutti i…, di…, il…“)
For example:
Ogni mattina vado all’università in treno. Tutti gli anni festeggiamo il Natale in famiglia. Il lunedì mangia sempre gli gnocchi.
To express absolute truth, valid for all people.
Example:
La Terra ruota intorno al Sole. Febbraio è il mese più corto dell’anno. In inverno fa molto freddo.
Especially in speech, to indicate a very close future (with expressions like "domani, stasera, più tardi, tra due giorni, dopodomani…“).
Example:
Domani pomeriggio vado dal dentista. Tra due giorni partiamo per il Brasile. Stasera io e Gianluca ci prendiamo una birra.
Sometimes it's used in place of the past to tell something, especially historical, usually to give more emphasis to what's being said, almost as if the events were close.
Example:
La Seconda Guerra Mondiale termina nel 1945. Dante Alighieri nasce a Firenze ma muore a Ravenna. Firenze è capitale del Regno d’Italia dal 1865 al 1871.
To express actions that began in the past but continue in the present:
Example:
Luca lavora in quell’azienda da 5 anni. Sono due anni che studia l’inglese.
Now you are able to use the present indicative! So it's not a problem for you to say what you usually do on the weekends, right? 😉
