optical activity is the ability of compounds that rotate the plane of a plane polarized light either to the left or right.
if the plane's polarized light rotates to the left it is called levorotatory and if it rotates to the right, it is called dextrorotatory.
compounds that are optically active must have Chiral or asymmetric carbon
Chiral carbon is that carbon that has four different attached groups.
