Replacing the angle stop or shut-off valve for a toilet is an important task that could help prevent your bathroom from flooding. Fortunately, when you have galvanized piping, it’s simple enough to do yourself. Mike’s here to show you how!

Once the water supply to the house has been turned off, remove the supply line going between the wall and the toilet tank. In an ideal situation, the galvanized nipple that the valve is connected to is accessible enough that a pipe wrench can be used to secure it while the valve is twisted off with a crescent wrench. That’s not the case here, so only a single wrench is used on the valve itself. When you can’t hold the nipple in place, it is possible for it to come out along with the valve, so be careful (and prepared to reinstall the nipple).

Once the old valve is off, wipe off any debris that’s on the nipple, and apply some fresh PTFE tape (clockwise). To install the valve, start by hand-tightening. After about three turns, use your wrench to complete another three. Reconnect the supply line, hand tightening it to the toilet’s fill valve (don’t use a wrench here - it could damage the plastic nut). When connecting the supply line to the stop, hand-tighten at first, then give an extra 1/4-turn with the wrench.

Once the actual installation is done, you’ll want to clear the line of any debris that may have gotten into it during the process. To do this, be sure that your new valve is closed. Turn the main water supply back on, and remove your toilet tank lid to access the fill valve. Remove the fill valve cap (instructions for many can be found online) and cover the opening with your hand. Slowly turn the toilet stop valve back on. Why the hand? With enough pressure, water can spray all the way to the ceiling!

Though we don’t show it in this video, there’s another way to flush the line: with the new valve in the off position and the water back on to the house, attach the supply line to the valve and put the other end into a bucket (or the tub, if close enough). Flush the water line by turning the valve on again for a few minutes. After that, turn the valve off again and attach the supply line to the toilet.
