Oxygen Sensor Test (fixed rich signal P0172, P0175)
These tests apply to all fuel injected systems that have oxygen sensor problems. The vehicle being tested is a 2006 Chevy Express Van with a 4.8L engine.
In this video I will be covering how to test an oxygen sensor that has a fixed rich (high volt) signal by comparing it to the downstream oxygen sensor that is on the same bank. This is a dual bank system with two separate catalytic converters and two separate downstream sensors. I will also back this test up by comparing O2 sensor voltage to tailpipe CO%.
One of the main issues you must consider when testing an oxygen sensor with a fixed rich or fixed lean signal is whether or not the sensor is faulty or if you have a mixture problem.

Symptoms:
 - low power
 - runs good cold
 - runs good at wide open throttle
 - all cylinders misfire on one side of engine
 - poor gas milage
 - negative fuel trim numbers (P0172, P0175)

Fix:
 - replace faulty upstream oxygen sensor

Testing procedures shown:
 - upstream and downstream O2 sensor comparison
 - comparing tailpipe CO emission to O2 sensor voltage
 - what a lean misfire looks like from the tailpipe

Tools used:
 - scan tool
 - gas analyser

You will find page for page lectures taken right from my book as well as exclusive classroom type case studies. What is so special about these classroom case studies? I pull live problem vehicles directly into my classroom and we troubleshoot them in real time, using and applying the theory and testing procedures we learn during the classroom lectures. There is no better on-line training of how to troubleshoot automotive electrical and electronics systems anywhere!
