Christmas Bells - A poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
About the poem - Christmas Bells is a poem that portrays a bitter yet hopeful reaction to the American Civil War. Longfellow starts the poem on an optimistic note that when he hears the Christmas bells he feels nostalgic about the happy Christmas memories of the past. However, the peaceful sound is suddenly drowned by the commotion of war, hatred in the form of the firing canons. This poem is recognized among most people as "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day".
About the poet - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807 -- 1882) was an American poet, educator and linguist. He was born in Portland, Maine, United States. He was one of the five Fireside Poets also known as household or schoolroom poets. The great versatility in his poetic work is clearly seen through his usage of anapestic and trochaic forms, blank verse, heroic couplets, ballads and sonnets.
