Holberg Suite by Edvard Grieg from the concert 'Melancholia', performed by Antwerp String Ensemble at the Saint Willibrorduskerk Antwerp on 23.10.2022.
Antwerp String Ensemble (ASE) is a string chamber orchestra created by Shuya Tanaka and Lucas Van Vlierberghe in the summer of 2022. Unistada, the new composition for cello solo and string ensemble by Van Vlierberghe, was dedicated to cellist Shuya Tanaka and was the beginning of them working together. This work led to the creation of ASE and the first concert series Melancholia.
Van Vlierberghe and Tanaka both studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp in the same period. Van Vlierberghe studied composition and conducting, Tanaka studied cello. During their studies they already worked together. For example, Van Vlierberghe dedicated his first cello suite to him.
The program Melancholia invites you to have inner peace and contemplation during and outside the concert. In this way, we would like you to be moved by the music.
One of our most important goals is to support young musicians and give them professional
experience and grow together as an ensemble. This collaboration wants to contribute to the musical and cultural scene in Antwerp and beyond. And to perform new music, written for the ensemle, by Van Vlierberghe.
