On Wednesday, June 16 the Trust shared a  virtual tour of the new Robert L. McNeil Jr. Galleries dedicated to American art between 1650 and 1850 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Participants were led through the galleries by Alexandra A. Kirtley, the Montgomery-Garvan Curator of American Decorative Arts.

Alexandra shared an amazing wealth of information on the galleries and the interpretation that inspired their installation. She also wanted to include this thoughtful remark on the gallery platforms, “One of my ideas for the galleries were the platforms.  That’s right. You read correctly. The platforms! We all knew that the old ones were MUCH too large (high), but my constant comments about how originally floors were a blond wood lead the designer (Jack Schlechter) to offer up one day…” you know Alexandra, we can see about yellow pine modular platforms…” Fortunately, they fit the budget (phew!!!) and we all think they present the furniture as the sculptural that it is!”

We hope you enjoy this and many more fascinating facts in her virtual tour above.

The mission of the Decorative Arts Trust, a non-profit organization, is to promote and foster the appreciation and study of the decorative arts.
