Oropharyngeal cancer affects the oral cavity and the area around the pharynx.
The most common cause is alcohol and smoking.
The second most common cause is the HPV (Human Papillomavirus).
It can be somewhat prevented by using HPV vaccines.

Initially, doctors perform a CT scan or MRI to determine the stage of the cancer.
Then, a PET-CT is done to identify any spread of the cancer.
Surgery is the most effective treatment for oropharyngeal cancer.
If surgery is not possible, doctors might recommend concurrent chemotherapy and radiation.
Organ-sparing radiotherapy can help preserve the organs in such cases.
IMRT (Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy) is the recommended radiation therapy for oropharyngeal cancer.
