Translation is the second stage of protein synthesis (after transcription), where mRNA is translated to make the amino acid chain. After the mRNA leaves the nucleus, it travels to a ribosome. Transfer RNA (tRNA) carries a specific amino acid and the anticodon on the tRNA recognises the complementary codon on mRNA to assemble the amino acids in the correct order. The amino acid chain eventually extends out into the cytoplasm, where it will arrange itself into secondary and tertiary structures due to interactions between these monopeptides and the aqueous environment.
