This is a shout out to our healing herbal ally comfrey who can help us in many unsavory situations.

Scientifically called Symphytum officinale of the Boraginaceae family, this perennial grows abundantly, offering its soothing gifts fresh from spring to fall (or dry some or infused it for out of season use).

Fresh comfrey poultices are rockstar mashes so helpful for injuries, bruises, first degree burns, fractures, broken bones, sprains, inflamed joints and ligaments, tendonitis, and other itis-es. It reduces inflammation and speeds up tissue repair. (thanks to the allantoin).

When addressing deep wounds that involve broken skin, best to use comfrey after the skin is no longer in danger of infection. Comfrey encourages growth of skin (allantoin), so we don't want to cover over the wound too quickly.

Comfrey is a perennial native of Eurasia but can be found growing throughout temperate zones of the world; USDA hardiness zones 4-8. Or grow some, if you don’t have any in your neighborhood—but beware that it can spread and also persist in the soil for many years.

Cautionary Note:
Comfrey leaf, root, and flower have been consumed as food and medicine for hundreds, if not thousands, of years, but now it has become controversial to ingest.

Since 2002 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the USA has prohibited the consumption of comfrey leaf & root. Both contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids (the roots contain 10X more than the leaves). Here we focus on the topical use of comfrey.

Do you use comfrey, and if yes, how so?
