The start of the South African Test summer and the first visitors are the top ranked team of the world. The hosts are in a period of transition with most of their batting stalwarts having retired or retiring imminently. The bowling follows a similar pattern specially with Kagiso Rabada and Ngidi still not certainties for this game owing to fitness concerns. Yet when one door closes another opens in cricket and this iconic Test series is a chance for the fresh crop like Zorzi Bedingham Coetzee to step up and announce themselves in the red ball game.

That will be lunch on day one of this Boxing Day Test here in Centurion. End of a riveting session. We saw everything in this morning session. Wickets boundaries dropped catches and we can say that the session was shared by both sides. India lost three quick wickets but the pair of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer has steadied the ship to take India to 91/3 at the end of 26 overs. South African skipper Temba Bavuma won the toss and had no hesitation in bowling on the spicy pitch. India got off to a shaky start as their skipper Rohit Sharma fell cheaply.

He pulled one straight into the hands of fine leg to fall on five in the fifth over to give Kagiso Rabada his first. His opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal looked solid at the crease and was joined by Shubman Gill. Jaiswal played positively and hit four boundaries but played one shot too many as he edged one to the keeper on 17. Burger picked up his maiden Test wicket as both the Indian openers were back in the hut inside the first 10 overs. Kohli walked out to bat at number four. It was a short stay for Gill as he gloved one to the keeper while on two.

The umpire was unmoved but a successful review from the Proteas ended his stay at the crease. Shreyas Iyer joined Kohli at the crease and played one square drive uppishly just to see Marco Jansen drop it. In the very next over Kohli got a life as Tony de Zorzi dropped one at square leg off Burger. Both Kohli and Iyer made sure that they pounced on the opportunity. They played positively from the word go and put away loose balls. Wow! How about that for a shot? Flicked flat and that has flown over the rope.

The South African bowlers struggled with their lines and lengths in the second half of the morning session and conceded runs. Kohli and Iyer remain unbeaten on 33 and 31 respectively till lunch as the visitors ended the session with 91 on the board for the loss of three wickets. The partnership of 67 between Kohli and Iyer has kept the Proteas at bay. They will be hoping to regroup quickly and come up with better plans to break this partnership. Both the Indian batters are looking solid at the crease and will be looking to go big.

Pitch Report | Shaun Pollock and Ravi Shastri: Good covering of grass. Teams tend to bat first because it tends to start a bit slow. As the Test progresses there might be a bit of up and down movement which could be tricky to handle. Batting will get difficult as the Test progresses. With the weather conditions South Africa would be tempted to go without a spinner. With the sun out the pitch tends to crack a bit more and get the spinners into play.

Don't expect the pitch to change too much across the Test. The best approach is bat first guts it out in the first two sessions and be happy if you're just 2 down at Lunch. The weather report isn’t too promising for the first two days but the rain is staying away for now and the players are having a nice warm up. It is expected to be a spicy deck with plenty of seam swing and bounce. Expect plenty of chin music on this Boxing Day!
